Application Guidelines for 14th National University Students Intelligent Car Race & Outdoor Unmanned Driving Challenge
National University Students Intelligent Car Race is one of the most influential and highly engaged college students’ competition platforms among universities. Establishing Outdoor Unmanned Driving Challenge is an effective way to better train college students to have a good grasp of advanced technologies in Artificial Intelligence (AI) area, including mechatronics, movement control, sensor appliance, machine learning, image recognition, SLAM map building and autonomous navigation, etc. Therefore, college students can know and master the common and practical technology in this field in advance.
Beijing Ironman ArtRobert co. LTD co-hosted Unmanned Driving Challenge with National University Students Intelligent Car Race Committee. The competition visualizes the appliance of intelligent car in practical fields based on unmanned driving, especially in the unmanned environment. Many situations which combine multiple technologies will be achieved like positioning and navigation, computer vision, radar, artificial intelligence, autonomous control and motor control, etc. Outdoor Unmanned Driving Challenge is expected to promote education through competition, further deepen the integration of industry and learning, broaden the teaching content of artificial intelligence, robotics and other related subjects, and improve the innovation ability and talent cultivation ability of artificial intelligence and robotics technology in college. The specific description of this competition is as follows:
National University Students Intelligent Car Race & Outdoor Unmanned Driving Challenge will use specified Type G car model, which is supplied by Beijing Ironman ArtRobert co.LTD.
Producing content for participants
Participants need to design and build single-chip microcomputer control system, power management module and other related software by themselves. NXP chips will be used in single-chip microcomputer control system. Due to the great technical difficulty of Outdoor Unmanned Driving Challenge and the high threshold for hardware circuit design, the secretariat of the competition will provide the unified technical schematic diagram of the drive circuit for the reference.
Based on the standard configuration of the car model, the participants are allowed to use the camera sensor, but they must use SLAM technology to complete the task. During the competition, the car model needs to run independently. It is forbidden to conduct the competition by manual remote control.
The racing track is built on the playground in the host university.
The total length of the track is between 50m and 100m and the width is between 2m and 3m. The track is enclosed by banners or other materials, whose height is between 30cm and 50cm. There is some bending in the track, among which alpha angle range is between 120°~160°, and beta angle range is between 90° ~ 130°. The detailed illustration is as follows in Graph 1:

In the Sample Track in Graph 2, the track is enclosed by banners. The height of the track is between 30cm~50cm. The specific material of banners enclosing the track is based on the scene of the race.
Before the race, staff will put 10 to 20 cone barrels in the racing track at random. The car model needs to avoid cone barrels autonomously and move on. The following video can be used as the reference for the specific positioning of cone barrel.
Before the race begins, the secretariat of the competition will provide a unified map of the race.
During the preliminary stage, the car model will navigate autonomously to avoid cone barrels according to the map, from the start point to the terminal point. The total time of completion will be recorded, and participants will be ranked according to the time. The top 32 teams will be selected to enter the final race.
The 32 teams which make it to the final round will go on to the knockout rounds. After the draw, there will be 16 groups and each group contains two teams. Two teams in the same group will start the race at the same time in the same track to avoid the obstacles autonomously. The winner will advance to the round of 16, then to the round of 8, 4 and finally to the final stage.
Rule description in the preliminary stage
When the car model touches the cone barrel, one second will be added to the total time.
When the car model touches the banner, two seconds will be added to the total time.
If the car model stops after touching the cone barrel or the banner, the race will be considered as a failure.
If the car model stops in the racing track, the race will be considered as a failure.
Rule description in the final stage
During the final, two car models start the race at the same time. The one which arrives at the terminal point first wins.
If two car models can not arrive at the terminal point finally, the one which drives further wins.
The race will adopt the same timing system as the other groups.
3.车模申请Application for Car Models
Due to the high price of the computing platform and sensor compared with the traditional racing car model, and to avoid that some universities will spend huge amount of money on buying parts to improve car model’s performance, considering the price and fairness, Beijing Ironman ArtRobert co. LTD will provide 100 standard unified intelligent car models for this competition. All car models will be returned after the final next year.

1.Each university can apply for one car model. If the total number is over 100, the secretariat of the competition will draw lots to decide which one get the application of the car model. The specific drawing rules and the final list of successful applicants will be published before January 30, 2019. Please submit the application as soon as possible.
2.If teachers who have applied for the car model don’t get the car model but still want to participate in the race, they can purchase the car model by themselves according to the configuration parameters.
3.Based on the drawing results, the committee will distribute the car model according to the order of submitting application form before February 28, 2019.
